The Balaton ... popular for many reasons
Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe; and although the number one resort to Hungarians and many other nationalities in Europe it is little known in the UK. Over 70km long (and with over 170km of shoreline) it not only provides varied and picturesque scenery, but also a great place to bathe, fish, sail, bicycle (even skate in Winter) and generally enjoy oneself. There are activities for all ages ranging from exciting (but not drunken and riotous) discos and clubs for young people; wonderful bathing and swimming safe for the very young and challenging for the older children; to tennis, fine food and vineyards, culture and thermal spas for the more mature. With new flights from Ryanair to Balaton Airport; numerous cheap flights to Budapest (where a motorway link makes it only an hour away); and a good train service accessibility has never been easier.
